Cates started as a model and gave up the job to pursue acting. Her first movie Paradise had a plot similar to The Blue Lagoon. She was aged 17 during the filming of the Paradise. Though Cates did the movie, she did not like the role she did in the movie. Fortunately, she soon found another movie the following year.

Cates starred in the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High and gained immense popularity from the movie. In the movie, she had a moment where she is in a bikini which was featured in Rolling Stone magazine described as "the most memorable bikini-drop in cinema history." Her co-star in the movie includes Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Judge Reinhold.

Cates also appeared in the comedy movie Private school along with co-star Matthew Modine and Betsy Russell. In 1984, Cates played her most iconic role as Kate Beringer in the movie Gremlins. Cates did a few movies after that which were not successful, and she retired from acting in 1994 to focus on raising her children.
