Donald's second marriage was with Lynn Halpern, which lasted only five years until their divorce in 1984. They tied the knot in 1979 and had a son from their relationship, Michael Bellisario. Michael has also played a character in Donald's TV series JAG.

His third marriage came with Deborah Pratt, which lasted for six years from 1984 to 1991. Donald and Deborah are parents to two children, Troain Bellisario, and Nicolas Bellisario.

Donald was born in Cokebury, Pennsylvania, to an Italina-American father, Albert Jethro Bellisario and Dana Bellisario. Prior to taking on the entertainemnt industry, Donald served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years from 1955 to 1959. In 1965, Donald served as an advertising copwrtier in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In the 80s, Donald co-created the TV series Magnum, Airwolf, Quantum Leap, JAG, and NCIS.

Donald wrote and directed the 1988 feature film Last Rites. In 2004, Donald received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which was aired in the Season 9 of JAG episode titled Trojan Horse. In 2007, Donald retired from NCIS, which had premired in 2002. However, Donald retained the title of exective producer of NCIS.

In 2001, Penn State named Donald a Distinguished Alumnus, the highest honor given to a graduate.
