The father and stepmother of a baby girl of age 9 from of Provo, Utah, have been arrested on child abuse charges after they used waterboarding as a form of punishment on their daughter.
According to Salt Lake City’s FOX 13 report, The suspects have been identified as Joseph Maeser Mitchell, 29, and Ilaria Catherina Mitchell, 28.
The couple reportedly punished the 9-year-old on three occasions; they tied her hands behind her back, held her down in a bathtub, putting a towel over her face and then ran water over her face, the girl told police.
According to Fox 13, a police report states, "The 9-year-old stated that she cannot breathe and it hurts when this happens".
Brittany Calabrese, the biological mother of the girl, expressed shock and outrage when she heard the the incident.
Brittany, who says she hasn’t seen her daughter since 2014, said, "It was the hardest thing for me to hear having to be in Texas. She’s nine, nine years old. That is torture of a child."
Authorities gave attention to the cast in November when Joseph brought his daughter to Utah Valley Hospital for an unspecified reason. When nurses made inquiries at the time, they determined something seemed wrong.
The child is currently in the custody of Utah's Division of Child and Family Services. The case has been handling by the legal system.
