Eddie McGuire is a huge name in the Australian media and football industry. The famed TV personality and president of AFL club Collingwood announced a plan to build a brand new $1 billion stadium adjacent to the mighty Melbourne Cricket Ground. The proposed site is the existing Hisense Arena. To make way for the new stadium, Hisense Arena would be moved down the road to the site occupied by Richmond railway station, which would then go underground.
The Collingwood president has put forth the idea for the AFL to sell the stadium and build a new 60,000-seat complex near the MCG and Rod Laver arena. It is also known as Melbourne's sports precinct.
McGuire’s plan to build “Victoria Stadium”, complete with a retractable roof, would include demolishing Etihad Stadium, a long-maligned venue located a hop, skip and jump away at Docklands.
“The proceeds of the sale would go towards game development and eliminating club debt”, McGuire said.
The president of Melbourne Stars Twenty20 cricket franchise also said the new stadium could also be used by other sports, such as rugby and soccer, and concerts, to create a central hub for events in Melbourne.
As per McGuire, selling the Docklands stadium would "bulletproof" the AFL competition because it is a liability.
Known for his long association with Australian Rules football (AFL) and Channel Nine, such a proposal from McGuire received mixed reviews on social media.
some have openly supported his idea and tweeted their support.
