The mixtape was released somewhere around December 2013 and was quite successful even for a fresh street artist.
Following the release of his first mixtape, he again resurfaced with another, Heart of the Projects. The mixtape received the same success as its predecessor.
His third mixtape titled Institution, which despite being a commercial failure, was able to grab the attention of a Canadian rapper Drake, who posted a video of himself dancing to Black's song. After Drake's post, it was all uphill for the rapper, and he immediately landed a record deal with

Kodak has been associated with Cuban Doll, a social media star who is well known for her Instagram posts. Cuban is also a rapper and has released an album titled Aaliyah Keef which was released in December 2017.
Although Cuban Doll is referred to as Kodak's girlfriend, rumor has it that the young rapper has a son named King Khalid Octave with Jammiah Broomfield.
Black was also once speculated to be gay. A couple of his pictures with a man, who claimed that the rapper was his lover, made the world raise questions against Kodak's sexuality.
The rumor was later laid to rest by Kodak when he dismissed the man's accusations as false.
The rapper has always been in controversies, saying and doing things that could entirely ruin his career. Seems like the rapper has huge affiliations with trouble.
Black has recently angered his own community when he stated that he despised the color of his skin, and preferred light skin women to dark colored. The statement angered many celebrities including Wiz Khalifa's ex-wife Amber Rose. But Kodak didn't apologize for the comment he made.
In October 2015, he was charged with 9 accusations which include battery, false imprisonment of a child, robbery, and possession of cannabis. He was freed at that time but was arrested in 2014 for the similar crimes.
