T.R. Knight is an American Actor most known for his roles as Dr. George O’Malley on the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. He started acting since age five and has also starred on Boardway, off-broadway, and theatre in his home state of Minnesota. For his performance in MCC Theater’s Scattergood in 2003, he received a Drama Desk Award nomination.
Knight was born Theodore Raymond Knight on March 26, 1973, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to father Wayne and mother Shirley Knight. His nationality is American and ethnicity White. Knight attended Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis for grades K-8 and went to Children’s Theatre Company after he received a Conners Foundation Scholarship as a Freshman. After his graduation from Academy of Holy Angels, he attended the University of Minnesota.
He also worked at the Red Owl Supermarket for some time with his brother. Being interested in acting since age five, he dropped out of the University after he got a leading role at the Guthrie Theater.
He moved to New York to pursue a career in acting. Knight starred in 2001 Broadway's revival of Noises Off opposite Patti LuPone. He also performed as Damis in 2003 Tartuffe. Knight then appeared in the 2003 Off-Broadway production Scattergood for which he received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actor in a play. He also played in the 2004 drama Boy.
Knight was also a cast member of 2003 Television series Charlie Lawrence. He got his worldwide fame after he was cast as Dr. George O’Malley on the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy alongside Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, and Justin Chambers. He played in the series from 2005 to 2009. The reason for departure from his role was due to his ‘breakdown in communication with executive producer and his decision of coming out as gay'.
For his performance as O’Malley, Knight received positive reviews and a nomination at the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Knight than starred in Parade as Leo Frank, which was opened at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles on October 4, 2009.
Knight returned to Broadway in 2010 in A Life in the Theatre where he starred alongside Patrick Stewart.
Regarding his sexuality, Knight is homosexual and is married to his boyfriend Patrick B. Leahy, a ballet dancer and writer, in Hudson, New York on October 5, 2013. The duo has been together for five years now and there are no signs of them divorcing or splitting.
