Stellan started his career at an early age of 21 with Swedish Television and films. Stellan is recognized best, for his portrayal of Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who worked to save the Holocaust victims.
Stellan in his starting days was in good terms with director Lars von Trier and has appeared in six Danish auteur’s features like The Kingdom, Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark, Dogville, Melancholia and Nymphomaniac. His has a strong working relationship is with Norwegian director Hans Petter Moland, who directed Kjaerlighetens Kjotere, Aberdeen, In Order of Disappearance and A Somewhat Gentle Man.
In 1997, Stellan played in a Norwegian film Insomnia, as a guilt-ridden policeman, Jonas Engstrom. Later he moved in for American films and his first Hollywood film was Noon Wine directed by Michael Fields in 1985. In 1990 he appeared in another American movie, The Hunt of Red October, as the character of Captain Tupolev, a Soviet submarine commander.
Later, Skarsgard was considered for the role of Oskar Schindler in Schindler’s List. Skarsgard played Dr. Erik Selvig in Marvel’s film Thor in 2011 and replayed the role in sequel Thor: The Dark World, in 2013 too. In 2012, Stellan played the role in The Avengers and again in the 2015's sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Stella again teamed with the director of Thor and appeared in as The Grand Duke in Cinderella the movie 2015.
Regarding Stellan's personal life, He was once a married man committed to My Agnes a physician. The couple tied their knot in April 1975 and had six children together. But the couple separated with a divorced in May 2007. After some time, he married Magan Everett in January 2009 and had two sons together, Ossain born in 2009, and Kolbjorn born in 2012. Since Skarsgard and Peter Stormare were best friends, Stormare later became the godfather of his son from first marriage – Gustaf. Stellan currently has a staggering net worth of $40 million.
