Just hours before the teenager Hector Ryan lost control of his car and slammed into a tree causing his death, had finished his final VCE exam in Melbourne.

An 18-year-old passenger was injured when the station wagon smashed into the tree on Moira Street, East Malvern, at 1 a.m. today.

Mr. Hector Ryan from Glen Iris died at the scene. Investigators believe Hector lost control of the car that caused it to leave the roadway and smash into the tree.

His passenger, an Ashburton man whose identity has not been revealed yet, was taken to the hospital. Hector had just finished his final VCE exam yesterday.

Shocked witnesses have described the aftermath of the disastrous crash which saw parts of the car thrown more than 50 meters.

An eyewitness Andrew Easton was across the road from the crash when it happened. He said;

On this side of the road we had a battery from the vehicle, about 50 metres from the car,

 He further added;

It would have been a projectile. I feel for the family at the moment ... anyone who is that young and they leave the planet, it makes me quite upset.
