    Shirley was born on March 31, 1934, in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, the United States to father, Paul Jones, and mother, Marjorie. Her mother was a housewife whereas her father Paul was the owner of the Jones Brewing Company. Her grandparents were from Wales. She was raised in the small nearby town of Smithton, Pennsylvania along with her siblings and friends. 

    At the age of six, Shirley started singing in the Methodist Church choir and learned voice lessons from Ralph Lewando. She attended South Huntingdon High School in Ruffs Dale, Pennsylvania, and also participated in school programme. She is the winner of Miss Pittsburgh contest held in 1952.

    Shirley made her acting debut in a musical based movie, Oklahoma!, which was directed by Fred Zinnemann. After a year, she appeared in Henry King's movie Carousel, where she played the role of Julie Jordan along with Cameron Mitchell. In 1957, she featured in an American musical movie, April Love, directed by Henry Levin. The total budget for the movie was $1,425,000, collected $4 million at the box office.
