Sharon was born as Sharon Tay in Singapore on the 15th of October, 1966 to Chinese parents. She has not revealed the name of her parents. She is an American and is of Chinese descent. 

Sharon Tay was also raised in Singapore until she was seven and then she moved to the United States. Her family moved to Connecticut and later relocated to the Philippines.

Sharon spent her sophomore at an International school and was later enrolled at a boarding school located in Massachusetts. After her high school graduation, Sharon Tay joined Boston University. There she majored in Broadcast Journalism, with a minor in International Relations. She finally graduated from there with a Bachelor of Science degree.

In 1986, Sharon Tay joined BNN and that was the beginning of her professional career, working alongside Amanda Lang and Stephnie Ruhle. She worked there as an anchor, writer, and producer of several news shows and then finally in 1992, she quit BNN. She then joined KMST-TV and KTLA-TV in 1992. The following year, Sharon joined KCCN-TV, now known as KION as a general assignment reporter/consumer investigative reporter, where her colleagues were Craig Kilborn.

She left KTLA in 2004 to pursue her dreams in MSNBC, where she hosted shows like MSNBC Entertainment Hot List and MSNBC at the Movies, working alongside Rachel Maddow. Sharon Tay has worked with Carmen Cole's husband Garth Kemp, and Evelyn Taft while she was appointed at the CBS 2 network.
