CAPTION: Colorado Highway Crash
The crash was followed by a subsequent fire on Interstate 70, Lakewood, Colorado, about 8 miles away from Denver.
A firefighter was among the many rushed to a local hospital when possibly a tire, exploded.
The event unfolded at around 4:30 p.m. (local time) when a semitrailer crashed into several stopped cars at a high speed during a traffic jam, said the traffic police.
However, the driver of that semitrailer survived.
Agent Ty Countryman of the Lakewood Police Department said,
I-70 eastbound traffic was at a standstill or close to a standstill because of a crash way up ahead. … The semi was eastbound and ended up colliding with the stopped cars,
We're almost four or five hours into this and our crash investigation has really yet to begin, given the magnitude of the size of this crash.
The police avoided giving rigid numbers at a conference on Thursday evening as rescue workers were still working to put out the fire on the scene of the crash.
Brian Dickey, a survivor of the crash said.
The back of my truck lifted up and shoved me forward, and I was hitting other cars,
When I came to a stop I look in my rearview mirror and all I saw was a bunch of flames. And I jumped out of the vehicle as fast as I could. There was so much fire at the time that I couldn't even really approach any of the other vehicles to see if there was any other survivors or what.
Agent Countryman told the accident could be one of the worst in Colorado's history.
Police officials reported at least 12 cars and 3 tractor-trailers involved in the crash.

However Country informed that the numbers may go up by Friday morning after the heat is finally down.
Authorities say that they're looking through a social media video that captured the accident for further clues.
After the crash, the highway was sealed and drivers were asked out of the area.
No charges were filed against the drivers as of late Thursday evening.
