Sara Dylan, birth name Shirley Marlin Noznisky, was born in Wilmington, Delaware, to Isaac and Bessie Noznisky on October 25, 1939. Her father was born in Poland in 1894 and finally became the citizen of the United States in 1912. He owned a scrap metal business in Wilmington and was shot dead by a drunken East European immigrant on November 18, 1956. Dylan has one older brother, Julius. She is of Jewish ethnicity and is of American nationality.
