He was married man. He married to Ann Sturgis in 1832. Ann Sturgis was the daughter of William F. Sturgis. William was a Boston merchant in the China trade, the California hide trade and the Maritime Fur Trade. He became partner in his father in law’s business. He attended common school in his life. He was elected to State House of Representatives of Massachusetts from 1851 to 1853. He was elected to fill the vacancy left by his friend and former partner William Appleton in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1861. He was elected to fill the seat, representing Massachusetts's fifth district in the 37th Congress. He was in the very reputed position throughout his politics career. He died on 14 February, 1875.
