Kate began working as a journalist for the magazine Mademoiselle in 1986, after majoring in journalism. There she met Andy Spade, whom she married later when they were both working in Manhattan.
She quit her job in 1991, with the title of Senior Fashion Editor/Head of Accessories, hence her work in the accessories department helped her lay the foundation for what Spade would do later with her designs.

Kate founded Kate Spade & Co. in 1993 along with her husband Andy Spade.

The name Frances is derived from her paternal side while Valentine came from Spade's maternal side.
Later in 2004, Kate published three books subjecting etiquette, entertainment, and fashion—Manners, Occasions, and Style.
A housekeeper found Spade dead in her Manhattan apartment on June 5, 2018. She was reported to have suicided by hanging herself. Police have reported the presence of a note that the late businesswoman left for her daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade.
Andy Spade released a press statement the day after her death stating that she was undergoing depression and anxiety.
