Police authorities say Melly shot two of his friends in October, then staged the crime scene so as to make it appear like a drive-by shooting incident.
According to a report obtained by TMZ, the State of Florida intends to seek the death penalty against Melly.
The State says it believes it can prove beyond doubt that Melly was behind the murder of his friends for financial purposes.
The murder itself was especially atrocious and heinous, and the rapper committed homicide in a calculated and premeditated fashion.
The State also believes that YNW Melly is a criminal gang member.
Police officials say YNW Melly and his friend, Cortlen Henry, shot Christopher Thomas Jr. and Anthony Williams in the head, torso, and back, eventually killing them.
The authorities reported Melly and Henry shot up their own vehicle to make it appear like a drive-by and then dropped the victims off at a nearby hospital's ER, where they were later pronounced dead.
Florida is one of 30 States in the United States where corporal punishment is legal.
