A police officer has fatally shot a man who was armed with a knife at a gas station in Florida, authorities have confirmed.
During a press conference, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Chief Chris Butler told media that a veteran officer shot the man on Thursday, March 14. The man is identified as Jerry Marrero of age 38.
According to the officials, an employee of the gas station called 911 and reported an aggressive man with a knife.
Chris said when Officer R.C. Santoro arrived at the scene, he found the armed man behind a counter.
When Santoro repeatedly told him to get on the ground but the suspect moved toward the officer, forcing the officer to shoot. Santoro reportedly fired Jerry six times. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died.
According to police records, Jerry has a history of kidnapping and assault charges. He was even placed on an involuntary psychological hold.
The races of the officer or suspect were not reported by the officials. Officer Santoro was placed on administrative leave.
