Peter Mayhew, Actor Who Played Chewbacca in Star Wars, Dies At Age 74

A sad time for Star Wars fans! Peter Mayhew, the actor best known for his appearance as Chewbacca in the worldwide pop-culture phenomenon, died on Tuesday, April 30. He was 74.

His death was confirmed by his family on his official Twitter page on Thursday, May 2.

The family wrote in a statement,

The family of Peter Mayhew, with deep love and sadness, regrets to share the news that Peter has passed away. He left us the evening of April 30, 2019 with his family by his side in his North Texas home.

The cause of death is unclear.

In addition to appearing in the original Star Wars trilogy, the 7-foot-3 star also starred on episode 3 of the film series’ prequel and the new trilogy.

Sources previously reported that Peter would reprise his role for Star Wars: Episode VII along with Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill.

His survivors include wife, Angie Mayhew, and their three children.

The family is asking for donations to the late actor's foundation, the Peter Mayhew Foundation. The foundation works to support people who are in crisis situations and children in need.

A private memorial for family members and friends will take place on June 29 for Peter. A public service is also set at Empire Con in L.A. this December.
