A Pennsylvania boy, namely Adrian Ortega of age 4, died after being impaled by a piece of glass while playing with his two sisters Wednesday night, authorities have confirmed.
The 4-year-old died after police said he was struck in the abdomen came from a broken picture frame.
Amanda Velez, the toddler's mother, said her son was playing with her two daughters, ages 2 and 5, in their home in North Philadelphia when the frame fell and shattering the glass.
Amanda told police officers that her son was hit in the stomach and was profusely bleeding. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly later.
In an interview with WPVI on Thursday, February 21, Amanda explained about the "freak accident".
She told the news station,
I heard a loud shatter and I hear him screaming ‘mommy’ so when I go run in the room he’s, like, hunched over glass. When I lift him up I saw a little bit of blood so I put my hand over it to, like, keep the pressure.
She added, "When I went to lay him down, his eyes started rolling behind his head".
Amanda said she didn't receive any details on the precise cause of death as doctors failed to operate on her son.
An autopsy is set to be performed on the toddler.
