Penn Dayton Badgley was born on 1st November 1986 in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. His ethnicity is white and holds the American nationality.

Penn is the only child of Duff Badgley and Lynne Murphy. His father, Duff, worked as a newspaper reporter and carpenter and also was a candidate for governor of Washington in 2008 for Green Party. His mother, Lynne, worked as a PTA president at Woolridge Elementary.

His parents split when he was just 12 years old. He also has a half-sibling from his mother's second marriage. He has to split his childhood between Woodlake, Virginia, and Seattle as his parents lived a separate life.

Attended Lewis & Clark College 

Badgley attended Woolridge Elementary and later transferred to St. Christopher's School. He moved to Charles Wright Academy in Tacoma, Washington. At the same time, he was also involved with Seattle Children's Theatre and began to do voiceovers for children's radio stations. 

He moved to Hollywood to began his career in acting at the age of 11. He completed his California High School Proficiency Exam and continued his studies at Santa Monica College. After his high school, he was accepted to the University of Southern California but later enrolled at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon.

Penn Badgley started his career as a voice artist for the video games Mario Golf 64 in 1999 and Mario Tennis 64 in 2000. He got his first major role as Philip Chancellor in American television soap opera The Young and the Restless.

For his role in The Young and the Restless, he was nominated for Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a Daytime TV series: Young Actor in 2001.

In 2000, he got his first movie role of Young Sean in the movie The Fluffer. Two years later, he got his first leading role of Joel Larsen in television series Do-Over

The actor played another significant role in the 2014 American drama television series The Mountain from 2004 to 2005.
