The secrets of Anthony Bourdain's death have been partially opening up. The late chef's mother, Gladys Bourdain, told The New York Times on Friday, June 8 that he had “been in a dark mood” days before his death by suicide.

Gladys, who is a longtime editor at the newspaper, said there had not been any indication of if her son had been thinking of taking his own life.

She said,

He is absolutely the last person in the world I would have ever dreamed would do something like this.

As French authorities confirmed on Saturday, June 9, there was no evidence of foul play or violence in the death of the television personality.

They also confirmed that Anthony died by suicide while he was at Le Chambard Hotel in the ancient village of Kaysersberg, and he was there to film an episode of his CNN show, Parts Unknown.

According to the authorities, Anthony used the belt of his hotel bathrobe to hang himself. They say toxicology tests were done on Anthony’s dead body, to check for medications or other drugs.

As previously reported, the television host died at the age of 61 on Friday, June 8 in his room at the Le Chambard hotel in France. He was found unresponsive by his friend and fellow chef Éric Ripert.
