Pete Shelley, the lead singer and co-founder of punk band the Buzzcocks, has died at the age of 63.

The band confirmed the death of the musician "with great sadness", calling him "one of the U.K.'s most influential and prolific songwriters".

The Buzzcocks took to Twitter on Thursday, December 6, to confirm his passing. The band didn't elaborate on the details of Pete's death but said more information (probably the cause of death) about his passing would be released later.

The band wrote, "It's with great sadness that we confirm the death of Pete Shelley, one of the UK's most influential and prolific songwriters and co-founder of the seminal original punk band Buzzcocks".

Here's the tweet, check it out.

Here's another tweet shared by the band.

Born on April 17, 1955, in Leigh, UK, Pete, whose real name was Peter Campbell McNeish, founded Buzzcocks with Howard Devoto after they met at the University of Bolton.
