Mexico Bus Accident: At Least 21 People Killed and Dozens Injured

At least 21 people were killed and 30 were injured after a tour bus and a semi-truck collided and burst into flames on a mountain road in Veracruz state, eastern Mexico, authorities have confirmed.

The tragic incident took place on Wednesday, May 29, on a highway in the Maltrata Hills region, where the roads wind between peaks that rise over 2,000 meters above sea level.

Regarding the reason for the accident, emergency officials said that one of the vehicles lost its brakes while going downhill and collided with the other.

The crash caused both of the vehicles to catch fire. Civil defense director for Nogales township Roberto Hernández said that when the bus turned onto one side, passengers were not able to use the exit doors.

Most of the victims were tourists from the southern state of Chiapas. According to Guadalupe Osorno, the head of the Civil Protection service for the Veracruz state, they were on their way back from a trip to a Roman Catholic shrine in Mexico City.
