Jussie Smollett was taken into custody for filing a false police report after claiming that he became a victim of a racist and homophobic attack.

The Empire star, 36, was arrested on Thursday, February 21, at 5 a.m., hours after being charged with felony disorderly conduct. It is an offense that can lead guilty one to three years in prison.

According to Chicago police superintendent, Eddie Johnson, Jussie "took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career".

Eddie said on Thursday that the television personality reportedly paid $3,500 to stage the attack because of his dissatisfaction with his salary.

Jessie was paid $65,000 per episode for appearing in the fifth season of the Fox musical drama.

Following the arrest of the Mighty Ducks star, his legal team released a statement that reads,

Today we witnessed an organized law enforcement spectacle that has no place in the American legal system. The presumption of innocence, a bedrock in the search for justice, was trampled upon at the expense of Mr. Smollett and notably, on the eve of a Mayoral election. Mr. Smollett is a young man of impeccable character and integrity who fiercely and solemnly maintains his innocence and feels betrayed by a system that apparently wants to skip due process and proceed directly to sentencing.

As previously reported, on January 29, the reality star claimed to police that he was physically attacked by two men at approx. 2 a.m. while having food at a Subway restaurant in Chicago.

He reported that the attackers yelled racist and homophobic slurs and 'This is MAGA country'. They allegedly poured an unknown chemical substance on him and then wrapped a rope around his neck.

The TV star, who is openly gay, claimed that he received a threatening letter days before the alleged attack. But the authorities now believe that the letter was written by Jussie himself.
