Former NFL player Cierre Wood and his ex-girlfriend Amy Taylor are accused of beating her 5-year-old daughter, La'Rayah Davis, to death.
The pair appeared in a Las Vegas court on Tuesday, April 16, and Amy, 25, appeared to be was sobbing while standing shackled in court.
Her court-appointed public defender, Sarah Hawkins, said during the hearing that she "is innocent until proven otherwise."
The former couple has been charged with felony child abuse.
The former footballer, 28, spoke only said in the court that he understood the charges. His attorney, Thomas Ericsson, said Cierre maintained his innocence. Thomas is to file a written request for his release on bail.
The judge was shocked at the severity of injuries found on the girl. Davis was found with internal injuries to her lungs and diaphragm.
According to prosecutor Michelle Jobe, a grand jury is expecting about the April 9 death.
Cierre and Amy were arrested on April 10, after the girl passed away at Summerlin Hospital one night before.
They were charged with first-degree child abuse and were each held on the bond of $5,000.
