Boy, 8, Finds Gun and Accidentally Shoots His Mother at a College Baseball Game

An 8-year-old boy found a gun and shot his mother at a college baseball game in Tennessee what officials say was an accident on Tuesday, May 14, authorities have confirmed.

The game has since been postponed.

The unidentified woman was rushed to a hospital with major injuries. FOX 13 of Memphis reported that her condition was initially critical but it was later upgraded to stable.

The man to who the gun was belongs has been arreasted and police has started an investigation to determine there is any need to press charges.

The shooting occurred at USA Stadium in Millington. The University of Memphis Tigers were playing against the University of Tennessee there.

According to the authorities, the child found the gun inside an antique car at the stadium and accidentally shot his mom during the game's first inning at approx. 6:45 p.m.

Millington police Chief Mark Dunbar said that the boy thought it was a toy gun so he picked it up, pulled the trigger, and shot his mom accidentally.

The University of Memphis released a statement following the incident. The Athletic Department of the university said in the statement,

We are saddened by the unfortunate accidental shooting at the baseball game at USA Stadium in Millington. The University of Memphis is cooperating fully with authorities in the investigation. Our deepest thoughts are with the family.
