A South Carolina Boy, 8, Shot and Killed During Home Invasion

A South Carolina boy of age 8 was shot and killed during a home invasion on Tuesday, May 14, authorities have confirmed.

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Office said in a press conference that the incident happened early Tuesday morning after a man wearing a mask broke into a family’s home.

The homeowner exchanged gunfire with the intruder. During the gunfight, the boy, who has been identified as Mason Hanahan, was shot. The masked man drove away from the scene.

The child was rushed to a nearby hospital after paramedics arrived at the scene. Hanahan was pronounced dead because of an apparent gunshot wound, according to the news release.

Investigators are seeking community tips to identify the masked man. The intruder was also reportedly shot during the gunfight.

The man who lived in the home is reportedly the dad of the boy. The father also suffered a gunshot but it was not life-threatening.

The dead boy's mom is left mourning the loss of her son, who had a 6-year-old sister.
