Mitchell and Greenspan had been friends for 12 years before Greenspan proposed her on Christmas. In an interview with The New York Times, Mitchell revealed how the whole thing happened. She said:

On 6th April 1997, Mitchell and Greenspan tied the knot at the Little Washington Inn. Their wedding ceremony was officiated by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the Supreme Court.
