Lori Shields, 38, a well-loved secretary at Eisenhower Elementary School in Missouri, was shot to death by her husband, Damien Shields, 42, before he fled and shot himself to be killed.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said in a press release, Damien was arrested after being released from a hospital in Missouri where he received treatment for a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

As per the report, Damien, who tried to kill himself after killing his wife, has been charged with first-degree murder.

The dead body of Lori was found by Norton County Sheriff deputies at a home in rural Norton on Sunday, April 7.

Investigators determined her husband as their main suspect with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

In the following day, police officers responded to a hotel room in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, where a man was shouting for help.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Damien suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital for his major injuries.

The Kansas Department of Corrections reported that the man had a history of domestic violence. He was previously sentenced to prison in November 2010, for aggravated battery, domestic battery and violation of a protection order.

He was released in December 2015.
