During his early career, Michael joined Colgate University, where he played for more than three years. While he was in his Universty, he played a defenseman and also served as a co-leader. Later he became the captain of the senior team. He played total 76 games with his college and scored 6 goals, 55 assists, 61 points and 203 penalty minutes.
Later, Michael began playing for Boston Bruins and made a contract with the club as a free agent. He also worked as the club's representative with the NHL Players' Association and was outspoken on numerous controversial issues, notably the role of Alan Eagleson.
After that Michael began serving as the head coach of the Boston College hockey team by replacing Steve Cedorchuk. However, he left the Boston college before coaching a game. Later, he became the head coach of Boston Bruins and led the team to the Presidents' Trophy and in the Stanley Cup finals for which he was named Executive of the Year by the sporting news.
Michael also worked as a general manager for New York Islanders, where Jill Nicolini served as an arena announcer. Besides his hockey career, he also worked as an analyst for NESN, NBC, and Versus, and Canada's TSN sports network.
