After completing his degree, Canavan worked on the project to count the number of policies that Australian governments have introduced after he worked as the Chief of Staff for the 2010 election. 

During those days Matt developed policies to provide tax and encourage people to move to the regions. Later in 2013, Matthew elected to the Senate in the Nationals party room. He was the first Senator based in Rockhampton for more than 20 years. 

Moreover, Matthew falls into controversy as his mother registered him as an Italian resident abroad but state that he was unknown about this. Later he announced that his Italian citizenship would be in effect from 2017 August 8.     

Moving towards his personal life, Matthew married Andrea at the age of 22. The couple gave birth to four sons and a daughter.

The couple used to live in Canberra and Brisbane, but currently, they are living a happy lifalong with their children,  in Yeppoon near the Rockhampton. And there is no sign and rumors of their divorce till date.

On 25th July 2017, Matthew Canavan resigned to the Cabinet due to doubts about him as he is eligible to be a member of the parliament. It was found that he was considered by the Italian authorities to be a citizen of Italy.
