After completing his graduation from Oxford, he returned to Australia and started working as a barrister. Talking about his political career, he first showed his interest in entering the Australian Parliament in 1981. Later in 1993, he was appointed as the chairman of the Republic Advisory Committee by Paul Keating. In January 2006, the Prime Minister John Howard gave him the responsibility for water, at the height of the 2000s Australian drought while he was promoted as an Environment and Water Resources Minister in January 2007.

On 15 September 2015, Malcolm became the 29th Prime Minister of Australia After becoming prime minister, he formed the first ministry on 14th September 2015 while he expanded his ministry for the second time on July 2, 2016. Later in the same month, Turnbull was sworn in at Government House in Canberra by governor General Peter Cosgrove, Queen Elizabeth II's representative in Australia, and has broadly stuck with the same team of ministers he took to the election.
