"We’ve had an interesting journey but at the same time, we know we have grown so much".
This is what Maia Shibutani had to say after becoming two-time World medalist (silver in 2016, bronze in 2011), the 2016 Four Continents champion, a two-time (2011 and 2015) NHK Trophy champion, the 2009 World Junior silver medalist, and the 2016 U, S, National champion. All that and only 22 years of age, Maia is amazing. And her humility and shy nature make her all the more endearing as a celeb.
Here's a preview of my upcoming feature collaboration with @onexwonder! The One X The Wonder is an editorial platform that celebrates female athletes. Thank you, @ronyshram! I'm honored to join an incredible group of women and be your first winter athlete. ??? The rest of my feature will be on www.onexwonder.com later this week!
Notice that her quote said "we"? Well, she has won all these recognitions ice dancing alongside her partner. This partner of hers is not in any way linked to her romantically. Rather, Maia has been dancing with her brother ever since she started training as an ice dancer when she was only 4 years old. People who don't know them mistake this duo to be real-life partners who have an affair with each other. They have been mistaken by many as being boyfriend/girlfriend and sometimes even husband/wife. That is probably because they share an undeniable connection with each other when they are performing.
Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani are the current awesome-est American ice dance team. They are the reigning US champions. They also recently won the silver at the 2016 ISU World Figure Skating Championships. They are the duo of brother and sister who entertain their fans with their "Shib Sibs" videos.
Maia & Alex also joined an impressive roster of other American skaters for the 2016 Stars on Ice tour, which opened on April 15th in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Their free dance to Coldplay's Fix You became a crowd-pleasing hit this season. It was actually able to set a new standard for their performances to come, which was already quite high.
"Our career has definitely been unique," Alex said, "but I wouldn’t change anything. What we went through got us to this moment. The ice dance field has never been stronger, never been more competitive. Our material this year really suited us. We’re going to continue on the trend we discovered. We’ve really taken our skating to another level.”
With their determination and insane talent, they are believed to be the forerunners in the Olympics of 2018 for the U.S. The American teams have now won world ice dancing medals in 10 of the last 12 years and this duo of brother and sister are said to continue the achievements.
With a net worth probably exceeding that of any adult sports person, Maia and Alex have reached new heights of recognition with every winning they bag. Fans can only hope this duo doesn't break up and keep pelting us with more of their splendid performances.
