Leon James Lee DeWyze, Jr is an American singer-songwriter born on April 2, 1986, to mother Kathleen (née Donahue) and father Leon (Lee) DeWyze, Sr. He is the winner of the ninth season of American Idol.
He belongs to American nationality and white ethnicity. DeWyze was brought up in Illinois along with his two sisters Shannon and Sarah and brother Michael.
Lev attended St. James Catholic elementary school in Arlington Heights, Illinois and Prospect High School in Mount Prospect, Illinois, until he was expelled due to too many fights until his senior years. He later joined Forest View Alternative School in Arlington Heights but never graduated from either of them and got his Ged instead.
An enthusiast in music, Lee worked as a paint salesman after he was expelled from school.
From 2007-2008, he also worked as a trading floor clerk at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, but again returned back to work at the Mount Prospect paint store.
Following this, he auditioned for American Idol making it to the Hollywood. The store supported him during his American Idol journey by selling t-shirt and encouraging his fan to vote for Lee.
Before making it to American Idol, he was discovered by Louis Svitek at a house party in northwest suburbs of Chicago when he was playing guitar and singing.
Svitek signed Dewyze to Wuli Records, an independent record label he runs with Ryan McGuire in Chicago. Along with Svitek, McGuire and Jeff Henderson, he formed the ‘Lee DeWyze Band’. He recorded two albums So I’m told(2007) and Slumberland (2010) that was produced by Ryan McGuire.
Wuli released a remixed and remastered edition of So I’m Told in 2010. In 2008, DeWyze along with Jeff Henderson's band recorded a disc for Square One Organic Baby Food Company owned by Henderson’s wife.
The Lee DeWyze band were known locally getting radio play on WXRT and was also featured on a local television sports program The Chicago Huddle hosted by ABC 7’s Ryan Chiaverini during 2008-2009 seasons.
DeWyze auditioned in Chicago after being encouraged by his friend Vincent Ferrara for the ninth season of American Idol at the United Center on June 22, 2009. He performed ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ for the audition and was among the thirteen people from Chicago to make it to Hollywood. During his Hollywood journey, he was grouped with Aaron Kelly and Crystal Bowersox, and they all made it to top 5.
On May 26, 2010, DeWyze beat Crystal Bowersox and was crowned the winner of American Idol season 9.
He was praised for his shy persona throughout the season and the confidence he showed on stage. DeWyze never landed in the bottom three throughout the show.

DeWyze also signed with Simon Fuller’s 19 entertainment and RCA Records. His coronation song cover was released as a digital single on May 27, 2010.
On June 6, 2010, DeWyze performed the national anthem for game 2 of the 2010 NBA finals on Staples Center.
He also took part in 2010 American Idols Live! Tour and performed Beautiful Day, Rocket Man, Treat Her Like a Lady, Halleluja and Use Somebody.
On August 8, 2010, DeWyze won Choice TV: Male reality/variety star at the Teen Choice Awards.

In July 2012, he teamed up with the heart foundation’s ‘One for the Heart’ campaign and offered his song Fight as a free download to those who donated to the organization. In November, he performed at the 2013 IP Summit – an event promoting the protection of intellectual property rights held by the Global Intellectual Property Center.
