Lauren Ambrose began her acting career in New York Theater, mainly in Off-Broadway productions. Her most notable theatrical performance was in the play My Fair lady.

She also made her television appearances during her early days. Lauren Ambrose most notable role was playing supporting guest roles on Law & Order, featuring Ice-T and Mariska Hargitay and a featured guest role on the show in the 1998 episode "Damaged" as Valerie Maxwell, a mentally-challenged young woman raped by a group of popular high school students.

Her debut film was in 1997 in In & Out, featuring Joan Cusack and Kevin Kline. Then she played a more prominent role in the high school comedy Can't Hardly Wait (1998), alongside Jennifer Love Hewitt.

She was the ingénue lead, Florence "Chicklet" Forrest, in the cult favorite Psycho Beach Party (2000). Lauren Ambrose began her role on Six Feet Under in early 2001, alongside Michael C. Hall and  Peter Krause.
