In the 1988 Winter Olympics, Kurt made his first appearance in the Olympics representing Canada.

That year, he also took part in World Championships and on 25th of March earned his name in the Guinness Book of Records by landing the first ratified quadruple jump in the history.

In 1990, he won a Lou Marsh Trophy. He is also the winner of the Lionel Conacher Award, and he won this award twice. Kurt was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and into Skate Canada Hall of Fame in 2000.

 In 2001, he was honored with a star on Canada's Hall of Fame.  

Kurt is also a choreographer and as a choreographer, he has choreographed programs for several skating figures including Jeremy Abbott, Patrick Chan, Alissa Czisny, Lucinda Ruh

He has also choreographed and co-directed the 2011-12 Stars on Ice tour. He was also aided by 2006 Olympic bronze medalist and 2008 World Champion Jeffrey Buttle.
