John was born on February 8, 1932, in Floral Park, New York, the United States to mother, Esther, and father, Johnny Williams. He spent his childhood along with his siblings Joan Williams, Donald Williams, Jerry Williams.
During his young age, he moved to Los Angeles, where he graduated in the North Hollywood High School. Later, he attended University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied with the Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He also attended Los Angeles City College for one semester as the school had a Studio Jazz Band. He also joined the University of Arizona where he completed music courses as part of his service.
Later John joined the United States Air Force, where he learned and played piano, brass and conducted and arranged music for The U.S. Air Force Band as part of his assignments. After sometimes, he started working as a music sensation for composer Henry Mancini. He has also worked with famous musicians like bassist Rolly Bundock, guitarist Bob Bain, and drummer Jack Sperling.
John's popular works include NBC Sunday Night Football, theme music for the 1984 Summer Olympic Games, "The Mission" theme used by NBC News, Lost in Space and Land of the Giants; as well as, the incidental music for the first season of Gilligan's Island.
