John grew up along with his siblings, Mary Annar and James. Form his childhood John was interested towards law, by planning to turn his passion into a profession he joined DEA New England Division in Boston.

For his graduation, John went to Suffolk University Law School as a student of  Bachelor in Law, without completing his bachelor from Suffolk Connolly  transferred to Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and completed his graduation.

As a step in the professional career, he started working as a teacher at South Boston High School and Dorchester High School.

Later in 1968, John moved to FBI with the help of FBI's Special Agent Dennis Condon. As an FBI's field officer he served in Baltimore, San Francisco, and also in New York City, where he helped to crack a child's pornography case and became popular. 

About his personal life, Connolly married to his childhood love, Marianne Lockary, although the couple was together from their childhood they were ended up in 1982. Later after the retirement from the FBI, In 1990 he got married to Elizabeth L. Moore, Moore was his colleague from the FBI in Boston.

 In 2005, Connolly was taken to a police custody claiming for conspiracy and murder, he committed the crime and charged with $7,000.
