John Amos is an American actor widely famous for starring the role of James Evans Sr. on the 1970's television series Good Times and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

John Amos was born John A. Amos, Jr. on December 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey, United States of America to mother Annabelle P. and father John A. Amos Sr. Both of his parents were an auto mechanic. He grew up with big dreams of football.

John received his formal education from East Orange (NJ) High School. He completed his high school graduation from there in 1958. He got enrolled at Long Beach City, College, but he got transferred to Colorado State University with a major in sociology.

While studying at Colorado State University, John was also active in football and played in the Colorado State Rams football team. He was signed by American Football League's Denver Broncos in 1964 but was released within two days because of his hamstring. In 1965, he played in the Continental Football League for Norfolk Neptunes and Wheeling Ironmen.

Amos has been active as an actor since 1970. That year he appeared as a weatherman Gordy Howard in the television show The Mary Tyler Moore Show. He appeared in the television show till 1973. In the early 1970s, he also starred in the sitcom Maude playing the role of James Evans Sr.
