Later, his mother married singer and composer Daniel Santos and Joe took his last name. He belongs to Mixed ethnicity and his birth sign was Gemini.

Joe graduated from Fordham University. While he was in college, he was interested in football and was also in the University team. He also became a semi-pro footballer in his college days.

Joe Santos started his career in 1964 with the movie Warm Nights and Hot Pleasures & Flesh & Laces. He struggled in show business and got the role with the help of his friend Al Pachino in the 1971 movie The Panic in Needle Park. In 1972, he appeared in box office hit Shaft's Big.

Santos got his major role in the movie Shamus alongside Burt Reynolds. Later, he appeared in big and small roles in films. He worked with famous actors like Al Pachino, Kevin Costner, Bruce Willis, Jeff Goldblum, Marlon Wayans and many more.

The American actor's first television series was Police Story as detective Sally Pickel. His breakthrough role came from the 1974 series The Rockford Files. He remained the part of the series until 1980 and got to share the screen with actress Gretchen Corbett
