Joan Didion is a native of Sacramento, California, born to Frank Reese and Eduene Didion. Didion, since her childhood was interested in writing and she started it from the age of 5. She defines herself a “shy, bookish child”.
Furthermore, about her education, Didon attended kindergarten and first grade, although, she could not attend school on a regular basis because her father was in the Army Air Corps during World War II due to which, her family was constantly being relocated.
Then in, 1944 her family settled back in Sacramento and she graduated from the "University of California, Berkely" with a Bachelor of Arts in English. After completion of her graduation, Joan, worked her way up from promotional copywriter to associate feature editor.
Further, after a big struggle, Didon published her very first novel,” Run, River”. After this, she came out with “Slouching Towards Bethlehem”, a collection of essays which describes her experience in California.
Till this date, she has published 5 Fiction including Play It As It Lays, A Book of Common Prayer, Democracy and The Last Thing He Wanted. Correspondingly, she also published numerous Nonfiction, and recently she published “South and West: From a Notebook. “ Till this date, she has released 13 Nonfiction.
Adding up to her career, Didion has a huge name and fame in the field of screenwriting. She began screenwriting with an American romantic drama, “The Panic in Needle Park”. Further, wrote numerous outstanding Screenplays such as Play It as It Lays, A Star Is Born, True Confession, Up Close & Personal and AS it Happens.
Eighty-two years Didion has achieved numerous awards and definitely acquired many honors. She was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letter degree by Harvard University. Respectively, she also received the National Book Foundation’s annual Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.
Exploring her personal life, Didion was married to her husband, John Gregory Dunne until his last breath. The couple first met in New York, while she was working at Vogue and soon after their first meeting both dated each other and after some years they married happily. The couple doesn’t have any child together because, Joan has an infertility issue, but they have adopted a girl child, Quintana Roo Dunne.
After the death of her Spouse, Dunee, Didion is living in an apartment on East 71st Street in New York City. As per our record, she is currently single.
