1979

Born in Merseburg, East Germany

An internet genius, Jawed Karim was born at the end of 1970s in Merseburg, East Germany to Naimul Karim and Christine Karim. He has one brother named Ilias Karim. His father is a Bangladeshi researcher at 3M and his mother is a scientist and researcher.

2004

Graduated from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

He attended Saint Paul Central High School and he also earned his high school graduation from there. After that he joined University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Department of Computer Science. He continued his coursework and finally earned his Bachelor of Science in computer science from U of I in 2004.

1998

Did an intern at Silicon Graphics Inc

But before he earned his Bachelor's degree from there, he joined PayPal as its early employee. In 1998, he did an intern at Silicon Graphics Inc. There he served on 3D voxel data management which also included the data for the Visible Human Project.

2005

Founded YouTube

While he was in PayPal, he became close with Chad Hurley and Steve Chen and together they founded a video sharing website called YouTube in 2005. On 23rd of April 2005, he posted the first video in YouTube under the title Me at the zoo.

2006

YouTube was acquired by Google

As he promised to be an informal adviser, he was offered a much lower share in the company after YouTube was acquired by Google in 2006. He earned the $64 million after Google purchased YouTube. Hurley and Chen earned highest amount of share.

Gave a lecture about the history of YouTube

At the end of 2006, he gave a lecture at the University of Illinois' annual ACM Conference about the history of YouTube and this lecture was titled YouTube: From Concept to Hyper-growth. In the early 2008, he launched a found called Youniversity Ventures. 

2013

Responded to Google+ integration

At the end of 2013, YouTube began using the Google + account to comment on the YouTube video. However, this change created a huge debate and Jawed also criticized YouTube for the use of Google +. Later Google dropped Google+ for its use in YouTube.
