He worked as Tehran bureau chief for The Washington Post. He had been in Tehran as a journalist since 2008. Before he became the Post's Tehran correspondent in 2012, he also wrote for other publications such as San Francisco Chronicle and Monocle.

Jason and his wife Yeganeh Salehi was arrested by the Iranian authorities when they raided Rezaian's Tehran residence on July 22, 2014, wherein the raid, they confiscated his laptops, books, and notes. Rezaian's wife, Salehi got released on bail on October 6 however, the court of Iran denied releasing Jason on bail. Later, it was confirmed by The Washington Post that Rezaian was charged with espionage and three other serious crimes such as "collaborating with hostile governments" and "propaganda against the establishment."
