James had been the target for many conservative activists after some comments that he made about President Donald Trump, in matters of molestations and pedophilia resurfaced.

Disney fired him and called his remarks "indefensible and inconsistent with our studio's values."

Gunn apologized for his actions and issued a statement, which was well received by his fans.

Gunn explained that he

viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I've developed as a person, so has my work and my humor.

James Gunn's fans and supporters claimed that Disney had overreacted and started the hashtag #WeAreGroot, which include cast members of the film and also Selma Blair.

They also amassed over 200,000 signatures for "Rehire James Gunn" campaign.

James's reinstating decision came after he was hired to direct the Suicide Squad sequel.

Disney has confirmed the news but stated nothing further.

Gunn had already written the script for the third sequel of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
