Iyanla Vanzant  was born on September 13th, 1953 as Rhonda Eva Harris. She was born to an alcoholic single mother and she was given birth at the back of the cab in Brooklyn. She had to face hard time since her childhood as her mother died when she was two years old.  

1955

Mother Died of breast cancer

Iyanla Vanzant  had an awful childhood as her mother was diagnosed with the breast cancer when she was just two years old. She was born from her mother's extramarital affairs by which she had to face lots of problem as her mother died.

1962

Raped by her own uncle

After her mother’s death by breast cancer, Iyanla Vanzant  was left to her father but he didn't look after her and frequently left her and her brother to his relatives. Once when she was nine years old, she was raped by her own uncle.

1971

Married to Kirk

Iyanla Vanzant  became the mother of the child when she was just sixteen. She then married to Kirk in 1971. Their relation was not that good enough as he was an alcohol addict and used to do harmful things to her. They finally got divorced the same year.

1973

Married to Charles Vanzant

After being a single mother of her child for two years from 1971 to 1973, Iyanla Vanzant  finally married Charles Vanzant in 1973. They also have one child together. Till that time she was the mother of three children. This relation was also not that good enough for her which led them to divorce again.

1979

Iyanla Vanzant  bonded with Charles Vanzant into a married life in 1973. However, this married life was full of sorrow as she attempted to suicide for several times. He was infidel, abusive and also not a loving husband. They finally got divorced in 1979.

2005

Won Daytime Emmy Awards

From her acting role Iyanla Vanzant  has been nominated in various prestigious awards. And to name one of them, Daytime Emmy Awards comes first. She was nominated in this award for the first time in 2005 for outstanding special class series and she was also so lucky to win it the same time. After struggling several years raising her children, she finally joined Medger Evers College. Iyanla Vanzant  graduated from there is 1983. She was also enrolled at Queens College and from there she received her degree in law in 1986.

Iyanla Vanzant 's struggle made her a writer. When she was pregnant with her daughter when she was just 16, she used to live in her friends basement. During that time she got a chance to express her feelings and finally in 1988, she published her first book titled A Path to Self Empowerment to Black Women.

Iyanla Vanzant was born as Rhonda Eva Harris on September 13, 1953, in the back of a taxi in Brooklyn, New York. Her mother is Sarah Jefferson, a railroad car maid, and father Horace Harris, a petty criminal, who was largely absent from her life.

Lyanla got married three times in her life. She was married to Kirk in her teenage but divorced later. She again married Charles Vanzant in 1973 and gave birth to another child but divorced in 1979.

Later she got married to Adeyemi Bandele in 1997. She has 3 children: Nisa (born in 1974), Damon (born in 1970) and Gemmia (born in 1972). Though the couple later divorced in 2007. Her daughter Gemmia, died from a rare form of colon cancer on Christmas Day in 2003.
