He made his National Rugby League debut at a young age of 18. He got selected on the bench during the 2006 State of Origin series and other two successive games for the Maroons. His team won the 2006 NRL Grand Final.

The 2008 NRL season saw an amazing form of Sam as he won the man of the match awards in rounds 8 and 9. He even got his name enlisted in the Australia training squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. He was also named as man of the match during the 2009 State of Origin series.
