With the completion of her high school graduation, Gates joined Brandeis University. Since her young age, she was interested in acting and that's why she majored in theatre arts while she was at Brandeis University.

She finally earned her Bachelor of Arts cum laude from there. Later on, she studied theatre in Paris.
