Francisco Alejandro Gattorno Sánchez was born on October 12, 1964, in Santa Clara, Cuba. His father was of Canarian heritage while his mother descended from the French colonial population of Saint Domingue. 

Fond of acting since his childhood, Francisco reportedly studied acting in Cuba and in Mexico. Then, at the age of 21, he made his film debut in Cuban production Una Novia para David (translated 'A Girlfriend for David') in 1985.

Then in 1989, he worked in TV film El verano de la señora Forbes (translated 'The Summer of Miss Forbes') that earned him exposure in the Mexican film industry. In 1992, Franciso worked in the Cuban-Spaniard mini-series Me Alquilo Para Soñar and made his move to Mexico & appeared one of the leading characters in the film Strawberry and Chocolate (1994).

Francisco Gattorno's fame went uphill with his appearance in the TV series La dueña (1995) as José María, a protagonist; there he worked 82 episodes. His major breakthrough came after starring in  Tú y yo (1996- 1997, 149 episodes) as co-protagonist Ricardo Vázquez alongside Maribel Guardia, Joan Sebastian, and Olga Breeskin. The telenovela became an international hit being adored & most-watched Hispanic show in the United States.

With brief appearances in Cañaveral de Pasiones (1996) and Preciosa (1998), Gattorno worked in another telenovela hit Laberintos de Pasion (1999-2000, 80 episodes).

By 2000, the Cuba-born actor made his Hollywood debut through appearance in the autobiography Before Night Falls; about Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas.

From 2001 to 2002, he worked in Amantes del desierto (translated 'Desert Lovers') in 121 epsiodes alongside Maritza Rodríguez, and was protagonist in Cómplices al rescate (2002, 128 episdoes). He made special appearance in Mexico teen telenovela Clase 406 starring Jorge Poza & Irán Castillo.

In 2004, as a theatre actor in the Spanish Repertory Theatre of New York, he worked in Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Ana en el trópico. Then, he worked in Tierra de Pasiones (2006), La Viuda de Blanco (2006- 2007), Mi pecado translated 'Burden of Guilt' (2009), and Abyss of Passion (2012).

For the first time, he appeared in the role of an antagonist in Amores verdaderos (translation 'True Love') in 2012-13 and then in Lo que la vida me robó (2014, 46 episodes).

Francisco Gattorno was main antangonist in Muchacha italiana viene a casarse (Italian Bride) from 2014 to 2015 in 70 episodes. The telenovela starred Livia Brito, José Ron, Enrique Rocha and Fernando Allende.
