A U.S. Coast Guard member from Miami, Florida, namely John Stanley Presnar, fatally shot to death his wife and son of age 7, before he turned the gun on himself. The shootings happened in John's southwest Miami-Dade residence.

Authorities also said on Sunday, December 16, that the 44-year-old suspect also shot his daughter, 8, but she survived. According to the Miami Herald report, the girl was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.

Miami-Dade police say the shooter had served an electronics technician since 2001.

An argument between John and his wife escalated after which her mom ran from the home. The officers found the bodies and the wounded girl inside when they arrived. As per the report, John took his own life by shooting himself to the head.

His wife was identified as Gretchen Presnar, 39, however, the names of the children were not released.

Police told the Herald, "When the subject started shooting, his wife told her mother to run out of the house and call for help".

Ryan Kelley, a spokesman for Coast Guard, said the Coast Guard was "deeply saddened by this tragedy and our hearts go out to the family members of those who were killed", adding, "We continue to pray for and offer the full support of the Coast Guard to the young child fighting for her life."
