Florida Bank Shooting: At Least 5 Dead, Suspect Was Arrested

At least five people were killed in a bank shooting in Florida after a suspect opened fire inside the bank on Wednesday, January 23. The suspect has since been arrested.

According to a Facebook post shared by Sebring police, the situation unfolded at approx. 12:35 p.m. at SunTrust Bank in Sebring, Florida after which police force and the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office made a perimeter.

Police said, "A subject contacted dispatch and reported that he had fired shots inside the bank". The statement added, "the suspect eventually surrendered to the HSCO SWAT team".

All the efforts to get "the barricaded subject” to leave were initially unsuccessful but the situation later negotiated after a SWAT team with the sheriff’s office went inside the bank.

Authorities identified the suspect at a news conference as 21-year-old Zephen Xaver, who was taken into custody.

Karl Hoglund, the Sebring Chief of Police, told media,

After an assessment to the scene, we’re sorry to learn that we have at least five victims, people who were senselessly murdered as a result of his act in this bank.

Earlier, Gov. Ron DeSantis tweeted in regards to the bank shooting, saying he was "praying for the victims and their families."

Sen. Marco Rubio, meanwhile, wrote, he was "grateful for our law enforcement officials who brought this incident to an end before more people lost their lives."

Authorities have not released the names of those the victims.
