Known for being the first African- American mayor of New Orleans, Ernest Nathan Morial was born to dressmaker Leonie V. Moore and cigar maker Walter Etienne Morial in New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.A.

He was also known as Dutch Morial.

1954

Receives Law degree from LSU and the First African American to do so

He was a leading man in many areas. Apart from being the first mayor of color in the city of New Orleans, he was also the first man of black ethnicity to receive a law degree from Louisiana State University. 

Hadn't he done so his classmate Robert F. Collins would've been the first.

May 1 , 1978

Inaugurated as First African American Mayor of New Orleans

On 1977, November Muriel triumphs over Joseph V DiRosa by 95% of votes by black and 20% of votes by white and becomes the first African American to command the position of New Orleans Mayor. 

He becomes the 57th Mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana.

 

1978

Works to reduce dependency on federal funds

Morial, being the industrial man he is begins working on reducing reliance on federally granted funds. The city of New Orleans during that year receives 42% of the total budget of the country which amounted to $90 million. 

1980

Proposes 10% set aside for public on minor business

In 1980, tension grew between Dutch and Sewage & Water Board due to the fact that he proposed a 10% budget set aside for public spending on minor businesses. 

The proposal succeeded under his leadership and inventiveness.

December 24 , 1989

Died of Complications from Asthma

Dutch was considering campaigning to become mayor in the election of 1990 but he met sudden demise in 1989 Dec 24 due to complications from asthma.

He was initially buried at St Louis Cemetary #1 and later re buried at St Louis Cemetary #3. He is succeeded by a son named Marc Muriel.

He was a leading man in many areas. Apart from being the first mayor of color in the city of New Orleans, he was also the first man of black ethnicity to receive a law degree from Louisiana State University, the Louisiana Legislature and went on to become the first African- American federal judge in the Southern United States.

He was married to Sybil Haydel. Not much is known about his wife and they both have a son name Marc Morial who later went on to became the 59th Mayor of New Orleans in Louisiana State.

His nationality was American. He died due to complications from asthma and was in the same city he was born and grew up in.
